Leveling in Ancient Realms is very important as its a free way to add to your gear score. Each level you gain will give you +1 to your gear score. You can see the XP each monster gives and the XP threshold for each level in the master stat sheet.
Melee takes longer to train as it divides XP gained between attack, strength and defense. It is however stronger in the long run because of the powerful gear.
